At the heart of the small fishing community of Port Orford lies a nonprofit organization of fishermen called the Port Orford Ocean Resource Team (POORT).

Leesa Cobb, executive director of POORT, has steered the community toward alliances with conservation organizations, scientists, universities and business consultants with the goal of strengthening the region’s environmental, social, and economic health — a triple bottom line.

This short video describes, in the words of Port Orford fishermen, the concerns and the solutions the Port Orford Ocean Resource Team envisions.

Read much more about Port Orford in the Summer 2009 issue of Edible Portland.

Green Fire Productions is developing an education campaign with video outreach tools to build awareness and support for holistic ocean and coastal resource management — referred to as ecosystem-based management. Green Fire is aiming to profile 3 to 5 communities on the West Coast that are implementing elements of ecosystem-based management in an effort to better manage coastal and marine resources. The Port Orford region is one of those areas.
