Announcing the 2011 Local Hero Award winners

Chosen by our readers, Edible Portland’s Local Hero Awards pay tribute to champions of the local food movement.

Read more about the Local Hero Awards here.

FARM
Your Backyard Farmer

Since 2006, Donna Smith and Robyn Streeter of Your Backyard Farmer have worked with homeowners to transform urban backyards into vegetable and fruit plots, paying weekly visits to the homes of each participant to plant, upkeep and harvest fresh produce.

Honored Nominees: Carman Ranch, Love Farm Organics, Prairie Creek Farm

RESTAURANT
Bamboo Sushi

The first certified-sustainable sushi restaurant in the world, Bamboo Sushi serves seafood that is sourced from plentiful, healthy fish populations — all caught using environmentally ethical methods.

Honored Nominees: Firehouse Restaurant, Paley’s Place, Portobello Vegan Trattoria

FOOD ARTISAN
Dave’s Killer Bread

Dave Dahl’s wholegrain and organic bread, which implores shoppers to “just say ‘No’ to bread on drugs,” has become a local favorite for its hearty, delicious flavor.

Honored Nominees: Coconut Bliss, Kettleman Bagel Company, Picklopolis

BEVERAGE ARTISAN
Vincent Family Cranberries

This small, multi-generational family farm launched its independent line of cranberry juice in June 2010, and has set itself apart with its locally sourced ingredients, small-scale operation and unbeatable product.

Honored Nominees: Hopworks Urban Brewery, New Deal Distillery, Steven Smith Teamaker

NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION
Oregon Food Bank

Through regional food banks, agencies and programs, the Oregon Food Bank network distributes emergency food to approximately 240,000 hungry people each month, and also works to address hunger’s root causes through public policy, outreach and education.

Honored Nominees: Friends of Family Farmers, NW Resistance Against Genetic Engineering, Sauvie Island Center

We salute all the nominees for their outstanding contributions to the resilience of the regional food community.
