Straw bale gardening is referred to as “inspired laziness” and creates an instant garden that can be planted in just a few weeks!
Bale gardening was originally developed in Europe as an alternative to using chemicals in the greenhouse industry. Crops were grown on top of straw bales to break cycles of pests and disease, and later, the straw was used in the fields as mulch.
In an urban garden, this technique rejuvenates compacted or depleted soil and is a great way to grow your own raised bed. Join Oregon Tilth for this fun, hands-on class to learn about this innovative growing technique!
