Tuesday, October 6, 6pm The Firehouse Restaurant is selling tickets for a five-course dinner benefiting the Woodlawn Children’s Garden. The event begins with a no-host cocktail hour at 5:30pm, followed by a family-style supper featuring fruits and vegetables grown in the Children’s Garden. The evening will include a brief talk from Portland Parks commissioner Nick Fish, and an opportunity to tour the garden from 5:00pm – 6:00pm. Tickets for the event are $50, which includes dinner with wine, and are tax-deductible. Call for tickets: (503)954-1702. The Children’s Gardening Program began in Portland in 1992. Since then, it has existed both as an after school only program and as it is now—with classes held both during the school day, after school, and in the summer. Providing free classes within the context of a Community Garden for the entirety of the growing season, this program is unique among other educational gardening opportunities for youth in Portland. Students get hands-on gardening experience, enjoy freshly-prepared snacks, and take home a share of the harvest. Remaining produce is donated to nearby food shelters, providing up to 400 pounds annually.
